The Sunday People revealed that car hire insurance sold at the rental desk to unsuspecting passengers often cost more than the actual car rental.

The paper revealed that 40% of customers are pressurised into taking additional excess insurance by pushy staff even though that insurance still excluded damage to the most vulnerable parts of the vehicle such as windscreens, tyres, roof and undercarriage.

Research from Travelsupermarket featured in the article which demonstrated how a week’s insurance with Avis could cost as much as £160.15 yet a more comprehensive policy could be bought by standalone insurer for just £13.30 (£2.99 a day) saving over £145.
