What is Car Hire Insurance?

The term car hire insurance covers a range of mandatory insurances and optional waivers which are available to cover hire vehicles. However, the cover you’ll receive may vary depending on the country you’re hiring in and the company you choose to hire with.

Collision Damage Waiver and Loss Damage Waiver

Collision Damage Waiver and Loss Damage Waiver Insurance effectively covers the full market value of the hire vehicle in the event it becomes damaged or stolen whilst in your possession. When hiring a car in Europe, CDW/LDW insurance is normally included as standard. However, when hiring in territories further afield, particularly the USA and Canada, you may be required to purchase this cover independently. This cover can either be purchased from the rental company direct or from a specialist insurer – such as – which is cheaper to buy and provides more comprehensive cover than most policies offered at the rental desks.

Car Hire Excess Insurance

When collecting your hire vehicle, even when CDW/LDW insurance is in place, you’ll normally be required to leave a deposit before the vehicle is handed over. This is because the renter is usually liable to pay the first portion of any loss or damage, so should your hire vehicle become damaged or stolen during your rental, you’ll be liable to pay the first portion of the damage or loss that’s incurred. This is referred to as an excess charge or fee.

By purchasing car hire excess insurance from iCarhireinsurance you can protect yourself financially against these charges. We offer both European and Worldwide policies which cover you for up to £6,000 worth of excess charges. What’s more, our policies cover vulnerable parts of the vehicle such as tyres, roof, windscreen and undercarriage as standard – parts which are often excluded from the rental companies’ equivalent policies.

Supplemental Liability Insurance

Also known as SLI or Third Party Liability Insurance, Supplemental Liability Insurance covers you in the event you are responsible for causing damage or injury to a third party. In Europe rental companies provide SLI with your vehicle as standard, however in other countries such as the USA and Canada the level of cover you’re required to have can vary significantly depending on which State or Province you’re hiring in. Please be sure to check with your rental company what level of cover you have before travelling.

PLEASE NOTE: do not provide SLI with any car rental insurance products.
