On the 7th day of Christmas my true love said to me: “I’ve seen this article about how extras can double the cost of a hire car. Let’s make sure we don’t get caught out.”

  • Extras, extras….hiring a Sat Nav costs around £100 from the rental company, while a child’s car seat costs around £10 per day bumping up your bill substantially.  Bring any ‘extras’ with you.
  • Also think carefully about whether you really need to put an extra driver on the policy.  A saving of around £60 could be made.
  • Indeed if you can, DON’T buy anything from the rental desk.  Pick up your car keys and keep walking!
  • Of course this is assuming that, because you’re a savvy traveller, you’ve already bought your car hire excess insurance from and saved up to eight times the amount you would have paid to the rental company and for, in most instances, a more comprehensive policy.
