On the 10th day of Christmas my true love said to me: “Did you really get charged extra for returning your hire car late and dirty?”

  • Many rental companies will charge you if you return the car late, and will sometimes even charge you if it is excessively dirty.
  • To play it save make sure that you return your rental car on time.  If you think that the extra charge is excessive make sure you keep all your documentation so you can complain to the head office when you get home.
  • When it comes to the state of the car it’s a good idea to return it in a reasonably clean state as it’s much easier to prove that there isn’t any damage on it.
  • Charges for a very dirty car are likely to be made after you have dropped it off, so whatever the state of the car make sure that you take photos  so you can prove that the charges are unfair.
