On Sunday 12th June, Daniel Jones the Consumer Editor at the News of the World revealed that car hire customers were being ripped off at the rental desk with shock, last minute car hire excess insurance costs that could double the cost of the rental.

The article revealed that pushy staff are pressurising customers into paying up to £160 per week for excess insurance when much cheaper alternatives are available when bought in advance. The News of the World used a week’s car hire in Alicante with Avis where excess insurance would cost and additional £160.15, and showed how customers could buy a daily excess insurance policy from iCarhireinsurance for just £13.30, saving nearly £150. Ernesto Suarez, CEO of iCarhireinsurance was quoted in the article urging people to do their research and buy excess insurance in advance.

“These costs are not usually disclosed during the booking process, so most people don’t know about them until it’s too late”
