Don't score an own goal when travelling to Champions League matches this winter

Celtic fans looking to travel to Europe for Champions League matches this season should make sure their costs don’t spiral if they’re hiring a car to get to the match.

iCarhireinsurance.com, the leading supplier of stand alone car hire excess insurance, researched the costs for fans to travel to Amsterdam for the 6 November game and Barcelona for the 11 December match, comparing the prices of five rental companies for a 24 hour hire period.

Both stadiums, the Amsterdam Arena, and the Nou Camp, in Barcelona, are roughly a 20 minute drive from the airport.

Footie fans are advised by iCarhireinsurance to plan ahead to avoid being stung at the rental desk with unwanted costs.  To hire a medium sized car, e.g., a VW Golf, in both locations costs around £80 to £90 on average, but hidden extras at the rental desk can double this original cost.

For instance, hiring with Hertz in Amsterdam, for the 6 November match, the car’s headline price is £72, however then there’s a £19.36 cost for the rental company’s excess insurance (to protect the customer against the first part of any possible claim), a £33.88 charge for an extra driver and £17.19 charge for a Sat Nav – amounting to a grand total of over £70!

Similarly for fans travelling to Barcelona, the costs at the rental desk can add on another 65%.  For example, a car hired from Europcar is £76, then once the excess insurance at £24 is added; an extra driver at £9.31; and a sat nav costing £16 is included - the customer now has to shell out another £49.31 when picking up their hire car.

An Extra Driver – Adding an extra driver in Amsterdam or Barcelona will cost on average £10, although if the driver is under 25 this will rise to around £15.

Sat Nav:  Buying a map (or bringing your own sat nav) might seem worth it compared with paying up to £17 for one.   Starting at a reasonable £4 in Amsterdam, if hiring with Sixt, travellers should expect to pay at least £12 for a Sat Nav.

Car Hire Excess Insurance – If excess waiver insurance is not purchased a hire car customer could be liable for up to £1200, according to iCarhireinsurance.com’s research, if the car gets damaged, even if it’s not the hirer’s fault, or stolen.

Football fans could be asked for up to £24 from a rental company to protect against this risk - this is over eight times the cost of an iCarhireinsurance.com policy at £2.99 a day.  iCarhireinsurance.com’s policies are also more comprehensive and cover vulnerable parts of the vehicle which are frequently excluded from car hire companies’ policies.

“Rental agreements are more difficult to understand than the off-side rule, but make sure you’re not giving the rental companies an open goal by paying for their expensive (and less comprehensive) excess insurance and instead always buy before you fly.  Even a small prang can cost hundreds so make sure you’re properly protected,” said Ernesto Suarez, founder and CEO at iCarhireinsurance.com.   “Also, remember to take your own Sat Nav with you, or borrow one, and keep extra drivers to a minimum to stop costs spiralling.”
