6. On the 6th day of Christmas my true love said to me: “Must remember to remind Dad about the rip off hire car fuel charges we had on holiday so they don’t get caught out.”

  • Rental companies are making it as hard as possible for you to return your hire car in the way they’ve prescribed.
  • Read the T&Cs carefully and check you know if you’re supposed to have filled up the fuel tank or to have let it run empty.  We’ve heard of people hiring on small islands who have had to drive round in circles to use up the fuel, which is not so good for their carbon footprint.
  • Also check you know where the closest petrol station is to the drop off point so you can fill up at the closest point and not incur a fuel (and admin!) charge
  • Some rental companies now even allow you to pay an additional charge to protect you against these fuel charges – a charge to protect you against a charge?!   Has the world gone mad?!
