On the 4th day of Christmas my true love said to me: How can I avoid the surprise charges at the rental desk?

  • The largest single outlay for travellers at the rental desk is the purchase of excess car hire insurance from the car hire company.  If this isn’t bought you can be liable for the first part of any claim up to the excess amount, which can as high as £2000 – ouch!   
  • The hard sell of this insurance can be trying for even the most experienced of travellers but of course buy it in advance from the leading provider, iCarhireinsurance.com, and you can ignore the sales pitch.  We advise you to stick your fingers in your ears and hum “why are we waiting…?” loudly! 
  • Also if possible, bring your own child’s car seat (Ka-ching a saving of approx. £70 made), don’t put an extra driver on the policy (ka-ching another £70 saving made) and a Sat Nav (another £100 saved).
