On the 11th day of Christmas my true love said to me: “Why it’s YOUR fault, even when it’s NOT your fault - I’m talking about hiring a car!”

  • If you hire a car, you are responsible for returning it in one piece and in the same state as when you hired it.  It’s a surprise to many drivers that they are liable for any costs if the car is damaged or stolen, even if it’s not their fault.
  • You could be the best driver in the world, but all it takes is for another driver to prang you in a car park (the most common place for damage to happen), or for it to be stolen, and you could be liable for up to £2000, sometimes £2500/£3000 in Australia. Make sure you purchase excess insurance in advance to protect yourself from this, and from the expensive policies offered at the rental desks.
