When we launched our car hire excess insurance in February 2010 it was an instant hit with customers, many of whom had experience of paying much higher rental desks around the world. Not long after we launched we started getting enquiries from customers asking about excess insurance for vans that they were renting and whether we had an insurance product for them. As a result of numerous customer requests we are please to announce that we have now developed and launched two daily van hire excess insurance products using our ethos of “great cover at a great price”.

For a low daily rate you can now choose to insure your van hire excess with iCarhireinsurance and decide whether you want to remove your excess all together, or reduce it to £100. We’ve done our research and we’re confident that these policies offer exceptional value and levels of cover when compared to the policies that are provided by the van rental companies directly. To see how our policies compare with the competition, see our comparison table on our van hire insurance homepage.

With many van rental companies the bigger the van, the bigger the excess and the bigger the cost of the excess insurance, but not with us! We wanted to keep things straight forward so you’ll pay a low, single daily rate whether you’re renting a small van, or a big van – right up to the largest category of van you can drive on a standard driving licence (category b).

So, what is a Van? This sounds straight forward enough but when we were developing our product if I asked 10 different people to define a van, I tended to get 10 different answers! Again, we’ve tried to keep this simple. Our policy will cover any light commercial vehicle up to a maximum allowable weight of 3,500kg. This includes vehicles with up to 9 seats so it would cover “crew-cabs” for example, or small minibuses. It will also cover pick-ups, drop sided vans, flatbeds and panel vans – it will even cover vans with a tail lift provided they don’t exceed the maximum allowable weight (MAW). If you’re not sure whether the policy would suit you, check our Van Hire FAQs which should make everything clear.

When is a van not a van? When it’s a “campervan” or a “caravan”!! It may sound obvious, but just because these have the word “van” in them, it does not make them commercial vehicles. One is a motor home and the other is a trailer – so unfortunately they are not covered by the daily van hire excess insurance policy. If you have one of these types of vehicles, and want it insured why not drop us a note? After all we’ve developed our van hire insurance because customers told us that they wanted it!
